Designed as a cross shaped form with deeply grooved grapevine motif throughout
Featuring depictions of the "living creatures" associated with the four Evangelists
Mark the Lion; Luke the Ox; Matthew the Angel; and John the Eagle
Centering a square step-cut amethyst weighing approximately 1.54 carats
Transparent medium purple in color and set in a milgrain bezel
Reverse is inscribed 'Bishop Freeman's Cross Presented by Mrs. Freeman"
The cross was given to Bishop James Edward Freeman on the day of his consecration
Inscribed 'J.E.F. from A.C.E. September, 29, 1923'
Bishop Freeman served as bishop of Episcopal Diocese of Washington from 1923-1943
He officiated at memorial services for figures such as Warren G. Harding, Woodrow Wilson, and William Howard Taft
The cross is also inscribed 'In memory of Eva Smith Cochran and William Francis Cochran'
This is in reference to the New York carpet mill heiress and her husband
Their patronage was to St. John's church in Yonkers, N.Y. where Bishop Freeman first served as Deacon
