• Designed as a cross shaped form with deeply grooved grapevine motif throughout
• Featuring depictions of the "living creatures" associated with the four Evangelists
• Mark the Lion; Luke the Ox; Matthew the Angel; and John the Eagle
• Centering a square step-cut amethyst weighing approximately 1.54 carats
• Transparent medium purple in color and set in a milgrain bezel
• Reverse is inscribed 'Bishop Freeman's Cross Presented by Mrs. Freeman"
• The cross was given to Bishop James Edward Freeman on the day of his consecration
• Inscribed 'J.E.F. from A.C.E. September, 29, 1923'
• Bishop Freeman served as bishop of Episcopal Diocese of Washington from 1923-1943
• He officiated at memorial services for figures such as Warren G. Harding, Woodrow Wilson, and William Howard Taft
• The cross is also inscribed 'In memory of Eva Smith Cochran and William Francis Cochran'
• This is in reference to the New York carpet mill heiress and her husband
• Their patronage was to St. John's church in Yonkers, N.Y. where Bishop Freeman first served as Deacon
