According to Homer’s Iliad, Ganymede was the youngest son of Tros, the mythical founder of Troy. While he was tending his father's flocks on Mount Ida, Zeus became completely captivated by the youth's appearance. The king of the gods swooped down in the form of an eagle, snatched the boy, and carried him to the heavens. On Mount Olympus, Ganymede replaced Hebe (the goddess of youth) as the divine cupbearer, responsible for serving nectar and ambrosia to the gods. Because his father was deeply saddened by the sudden loss of his son, Zeus consoled him by gifting him divine, immortal horses.
