Featuring an oval-shaped plaque of agate measuring 29.0 x 40.0 mm carved with detailed cameo
Depicting a Marlborough Gem carving of the marriage of Cupid & Psyche
Greek mythological figures are depicted in veils with winged putti carrying gifts
Cameo is carved from white banding atop a translucent dark brown band
Prong set with a halo surround of pearl beads - with additional pearls throughout and as drop
Ranging in size from 4.0 to 7.0 mm near-round white in body color with strong iridescence
Accented by rose cut diamonds bead set throughout bale and foliate motifs
Weighing approximately 1.00 carat total - G/H color with VS2 clarity
Reverse features a locket compartment with a removable glass cover

Luigi Rosi was a cameo artist who worked in Rome during the mid-nineteenth century. He was a pupil of Giovanni Johan Dies, who supplied jewels to European royals! Rosi's works can be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the British Museum of Art, and other institutions around the world. He often depicted classical figures and tales like those depicted in this piece. This piece is a lovingly rendered replica of one of the most famous cameo gems in the world, The Marlborough Gem, which is believed to have been carved circa 1st century A.D. The gem was once owned by the esteemed Baroque painter Peter Paul Reubens and was acquired from the estate of the Duke of Marlborough. It now resides in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts on display!
